There are some initiatives taken by people in the world which genuinely touch you. For me NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is one such event.
The event is an annual creative writing project coordinated by the non-profit organization The Office of Letters and Light. (as told by Wiki). Spanning the month of November, the project challenges participants to write 50,000 words of a new novel in one month.
It can be a single novel…or you can just write 50k words of an incomplete novel.
There are no prizes…this event is solely for you. After the word count of your novel is verified (via automated means…you can also encrypt your novel before submitting), you receive a printable certificate, an icon they can display on the web, and inclusion on the list of winners.

As wiki aptly puts it : No precautions are taken to prevent cheating; since the only significant reward for winning is the finished novel itself and the satisfaction of having written it, there is little incentive to cheat.

The event is great for aspiring writers who have been procrastinating at starting their novels. The event gives them the much needed kick start as its quite motivating to start off on such an event with thousands (170,000 in the 2009 event) of people all over the globe.

Its also good for people who want to test themselves in the art of writing. A 50k word, time based challenge on any possible topic seems fun to say the least !

The only thing that bugs me is their slogan – “No Plot?, No Problem”. While it exists to encourage more people to join, somehow I don’t like the the added emphasis on quantity rather than quality.

But I guess 1 event cant serve too many purposes…so no complaining!

I hope to participate in this event…..can’t be sure though. The month of November is going to be very hectic for me…so lets see….keeping my fingers crossed πŸ™‚

Do check the funny NanoWriMo Calendar below :
